A Lesson Learned

February 14th, 2007 by edit1media

February 14, 2007

As with many things in life, there are times when you should definitely hire a pro. Chris and I have been learning that this week while trying to do some DIY projects around our home-studio. Replacing the front door, trim and base moulding in the front entrance certainly seemed like an easy thing to do. Boy were we wrong!

Apparently walls are never completey square and painting always takes longer than expected…especially if you are a perfectionist like me. It’s been three days and with the amount of editing I’ve got to do I can’t afford that sort of time away from my computer!!! The worst part is now have a raspberry pink front door with cat prints on it. I wanted a deep, dark “Edit 1 Media” red with NO cat prints.

Oh, and I have two cats with pink paws now too.

Fortunately this is something that can be fixed. In the long run it’s taken up a lot of time and will cost us quite a bit more money than if we had just hired a pro. However, unlike some things in life, at least we have an opportunity to fix it.

There are still too many couples that underestimate how much experience and skill goes in to shooting and editing a wedding video. Unfortunately some brides skimp on videography or skip it all together, only to later regret it. The worst part is all the memories that are lost can never be regained. The parts of the day that the bride and groom missed are gone forever. And as time goes on, this regret only gets worse.

So take it from me, whether you are replacing the trim in your house or looking at a wedding video, I highly recommend hiring a pro!!! You’ll be glad you did later on!

First Glance – Sahalee Country Club

February 9th, 2007 by edit1media

February 7, 2007

This is from a video that I’m finishing up right now. Helen and Jeff are totally and completely in love. Helen was just the nicest bride…she kept saying “I want my vendors to be happy!” and made sure we were fed and well watered. I swear she was more concerned about the welfare of us and her photographer, Tania from Azzura Photography than she was about herself. Just one of those really sweet, caring ladies.

This video is when they see each other for the first time that day. Jeff was so emotional and they were just adorable. Warning: this one is really romantic! :)

Helen & Jeff’s wedding was held at the Sahalee Country Club. This was the first time we shot there, and it’s a beautiful venue! The staff was great and the food was really yummy! This was also the first time we worked with Tania and she was awesome! The funny thing is we wound up working with her again a week or so later! It’s funny how we might not work with a specific photographer for a long time (or ever) and then suddenly there are several weddings in a row together! Tania is a lot of fun and takes uber gorgeous shots!

Kasha & Jason

February 6th, 2007 by edit1media

February 6, 2007

I’m just busy as a bee being a little editing machine here!

Here is the highlight from Kasha & Jason’s wedding that we are delivering today. Kasha initially didn’t want a wedding video but her mom convinced her to hire us, and we are so happy she did! What a super nice couple (and very video-genic too!).

Kasha & Jason were married at Holy Rosary Church in Edmonds and had their reception at the Edgewater Hotel on the Seattle waterfront. It was a hot and sunny day with blue skies and outrageous sunshine! I’m so glad that they will have this keepsake to share with their families and hopefully someday with their children and grandchildren (no pressure there, Kasha!).

Update: Here is the email I just got from Kasha the day after she got the video.

“I LOVE the DVD, I love it, I love it!!! Thank you so much, you did a great job editing! I’ve watched it about 5 times already!!! Jason is really happy with it also! I’ve showed several friends here at work the highlight online and they love it, one friend even got teary eyed! Thank you again for all your great work. I can’t wait to share the video with my grandma this weekend. Thanks again!

Aegis Concept Video

February 6th, 2007 by edit1media

February 5, 2007

By popular demand, here is the concept video we did for Aegis Living’s Annual Leadership Meeting. The theme of the meeting was Overcoming Extreme Adversity and after several days of emotional speakers and activities, this was a welcome humor break. It’s a tad bit campy, but it fit the people and the meeting well! We had so much fun filming and editing this piece! I hope you love it!

Tonie & Renato

February 4th, 2007 by edit1media

February 4, 2007

Last night we filmed Tonie & Renato’s wedding at St. James Cathedral and the W Hotel. It was a gorgeous wedding filled with red roses and sparkle!

Just a few weeks before their wedding, Tonie & Renato decided to upgrade to a Same Day Edit. I told them not to tell anyone so that it would be a surprise. We are also filming Tonie’s cousin’s wedding (Reza & Ryan) in September and they ARE getting a Same Day Edit. So we thought it would be fun to see Reza & Ryan’s reaction!

Tonie saw Juliette & Mark’s Same Day Edit (posted in January) and fell in love with it. Basically Tonie said she wanted hers to be just like Juliette’s. So we used the same music and even a few of the same shots of the church (since the church doesn’t change!).

Tonie did an amazing job planning her wedding as everything went as planned and on time! Of course Ed from the Wedding DJ’s and Lisa from the W Hotel did a fabulous job at keeping everything on track during the reception so Tonie didn’t have to worry about that part!

When we played the Same Day Edit at the reception, everyone cheered and cried…it was great! And the rest of the night we had so many guests coming up to us asking for business cards. I think we are officially the family videographers! Even the photographers were in tears and immediately said they would put us on their referral list.

A huge thank you to Dawn and Chris for doing an awesome job shooting!

Training DVD

February 3rd, 2007 by edit1media

February 3, 2007

If you’ve read anything else in our blog or have ever met me, you probably realize how passionate Chris and I are about Same Day Edits. I really feel they make such a huge impact on weddings and corporate functions that it’s worth the extra stress to be able to pull these off for our clients. I’m also convinced that this service is elevating the perception of videography, which (hopefully) helps all professional videographers!

So I thought I’d give ourselves a little plug. Last year I created a training DVD to go along with my seminar at the 4Ever Group Video ‘06 conference. Not only does it take the viewer step-by-step on creating a Same Day Edit, but it also teaches you about selling SDE’s, the necessary equipment needed, creating templates, etc. I have also received some great feedback from people who have bought the DVD who still aren’t doing SDE’s yet, but they said the DVD was a great help with overall editing and organizational ideas.

The DVD is about 50% ‘hands-on’ editing info. We currently use Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 but all the ideas can be applied to any NLE. There are also seven (I think!) actual Same Day Edits that you can watch either with or without voice over of me discussing why a certain shot was used, a tid bit on how it was edited, etc. etc.

So here is where you can buy this gem of a DVD:

Insane Week!!

February 2nd, 2007 by edit1media

February 2, 2007

On Thursday and Friday (25th & 26th) we filmed at three locations for a short concept video for the Aegis Living Annual Leadership Meeting. Then we had a wedding with a Same Day Edit on Saturday (more about that below!).

Then Sunday through Wednesday the Edit 1 Media team went to work at the meeting! Chris and Brian shot tons of video and I wound up creating a total of 7 videos for the conference. That’s right…SEVEN videos in 3-1/2 days! There was about 50 hours worth of footage from two cameras, not including the “Amazing Race” where 7 teams of people each had a video camera and I had to edit their footage. I didn’t sleep much and hardly ever left the hotel room, but the execs were thrilled with the results.

This is truly a remarkable company and we love working with them. They are creative, loving, loyal people and they really understand the impact of good videography. We are truly honored to be working with them so much! As a major side bonus we get to see some amazing speakers and be inspired by great people.

Here is the video from the Amazing Race. All this footage was shot on tiny little Panasonic 320 3CCD cameras by a team member. The teams didn’t know about the race and some people had never met each other before, so it was a cool experience for them! They had several areas throughout Seattle that they needed to go to and take a group video. Then the last stop was a place called FareStart which helps the homeless learn skills to work in the restaurant industry. The teams had to help scrub the place (and it was a real mess!) as a sort of community service. Even the CEO got in there and mopped floors! Like I said, they are an amazing group of people!

Now this is the highlight video that we put together for the very end of the Awards Banquet. It has footage of speakers, the Amazing Race, cleaning at FareStart, and when they went to a totally cool private theater called The Big Picture and saw the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. But the coolest part is at the end of the movie Christoper Gardner himself came out onto the stage! Everyone was blown away!

KOMO4 News was also there to capture the moment and you can see their video here.
